Article by Deborah Lloyd, Reiki Master
On one of the nightly news programs in the United States, the last news item of the broadcast some evenings is a segment entitled, “Making a Difference”. It is a story about someone doing good deeds in the world – it could be a child who received donations to build a buddy bench at his elementary school, a teenager who mentors young children in playing a sport, or an adult who has started a program to give unused food from restaurants to the homeless. It is always heartwarming, and it is a reminder there are many loving people in the world – a message that is vitally important after the troubling news events of the day.
All of us can utilize such moments to assess in what ways we are making a difference in today’s world. Whether we acknowledge it, or not, our lives are always affecting the energies on earth. Our lives may add to positive energies, or negative energies. And, our complacency in certain areas of our lives may facilitate the lack of progress towards better ways of being. One thing we can count on, however, is that the practice of Reiki will always result in positive changes.
Let’s imagine that you have just completed a Reiki session for a close friend of yours, who was feeling conflicted, due to changes at her workplace. She believed these changes were detrimental to her colleagues and herself, and she was feeling highly stressed. Reiki decreased her stress levels and allowed her to find the new possibilities these changes afforded her and other staff. Reiki removed the emotional blockages caused by feelings of uncertainty, based in fear. A sense of serenity and peace filled her being.
After the session, your friend went home and had a pleasant dinner and evening with her spouse and teen-aged children. She apologized for being irritable the past few evenings, and the family enjoyed sharing the stories of their days at work and school. The following day at work, she talked to her colleagues about possible ways of approaching the impending changes. The feelings of anger and distress dissipated, as each person started to feel encouraged and hopeful. The department manager felt the difference immediately and voiced appreciation for the staff’s acceptance. That evening, each coworker had a more relaxing evening at home. The ripple effect of one Reiki session was remarkable.
This example may feel too idealistic, or too optimistic, to some readers. Yet, if each of us really studied how Reiki has changed our lives, we know these kinds of things truly do happen! It is miraculous how one act of kindness can change someone’s attitude, and that person becomes kinder to another, and the ripple effect expands. Giving Reiki is certainly an act of kindness, and yet it is much more.
The changes in the receiver’s, and the giver’s, energetic fields expand beyond the obvious benefits of relaxation, or physical discomfort. Every moment of our lives, we bring our energies to the world around us – those energies are based in either love or fear. Reiki enables us (and those to whom we give Reiki) to change fear energies into love energies. With frequent use of Reiki, our thoughts and our beliefs will change over time, as we change ourselves through the healing, loving energies of Reiki. We do make a difference in the world.
