Ancient practices such as Yoga and Chi Gong have shown results over thousands of years that give us an holistic understanding of ourselves and the incredible connection between our different bodies. We can imagine ourselves as having layers, like an onion, except each layer has a different density. The physical body is the most dense and visible. The etheric body, though not visible to most, is dense enough to be called sub-physical. Beyond these layers we become more and more subtle. Very few people are able to see the astral body without the help of a mind-altering substance and accessing the even more subtle causal body usually requires an authentic daily practice, such as yoga and meditation, that involves purification of all the bodies and developing excellent lucidity of mind.
Over time this knowledge and our experience has helped us to understand that illness manifested physically is usually connected to something in our subtle energetic make-up. Persistent physical ailments are often healed once the deeper sub-physical root is discovered and dealt with. One of the advantages of regular Reiki sessions is that we are often able to prevent illness from manifesting in our bodies by keeping the subtle energy bodies clear. It is believed that it takes quite some time before an illness manifests fully in the physical, depending on the nature of the disease.
Reiki works more directly with our second body, the etheric layer, also known as the bio-field, which reorganises itself automatically in response to a connection to Reiki. However, indirectly Reiki affects all our different bodies simply because they are all connected. Through relaxation Reiki activates the natural healing response of the body, which may cause a ripple effect of rebalancing throughout our different layers. How quickly this happens depends on many factors unique to the receiver such as how quickly a person’s subconscious mind is able to make a particular change.
A person suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), for example, comes for a few Reiki sessions. During a session, the practitioner feels guided to use the emotional healing symbol. The receiver experiences anxiety arising and a mental insight into the emotional root of the IBS. Healing is happening on many different levels here. The physical issue begins to subside because of a connection made in the subconscious. These mental connections happen in the deeper astral body. Anxiety is felt in the less subtle parts of the astral body, where we experience emotions. All this happens as a natural response to Reiki depending on what a person is ready to heal at the time.
Many people who suffer from chronic illness are stuck in an awful cycle of taking medication, feeling temporary relief and a return of symptoms because they are not treating themselves holistically and finding the deeper cause of their illness. Although Reiki is an excellent holistic therapy, it is often not all that is needed, especially if a person receives no clarity regarding their subconscious issues. In such cases Reiki treatment can be greatly enhanced when used in conjunction with therapies that work directly with the subconscious mind, such as hypnotherapy and certain types of psychotherapy.
Understanding ourselves as multi-layered beings is crucial for true healing. We are so much more than physical bodies and Reiki practice gives us a very tangible experience this. We are holistic by nature and therefore deserve to be treated holistically. It’s great to see Reiki becoming more accepted in the mainstream and offered in so many hospitals as an effective complementary medicine. It shows a change in the way we’re thinking about and taking care of ourselves.

This is so true, I have found when doing my reiki sessions… If I just stay on the etheric body I don’t have such a profound affect so have adapted my practice working down the chakra point but working outwards… starting at the etheric point to connect with that chakra then moving my hands up to the spiritual body an ascending back down to the physical… as I move down and feel extra work is needed there I stop for a while until clear then work further down until I get back to where I started. I’ve found this has a more profound affect on all levels xx
