The human being is an extraordinarily complex open information system. We are constantly taking in information and making adjustments according to what is received. Every individual responds to new information uniquely depending on the condition of their overall system at the time. We see this with Reiki treatment. Although there are some predictable reactions, everyone responds to Reiki in their own way.
We can think of a Reiki initiation as a transference of a piece of information, which is stored in the practitioner’s hands and re-activated at any time by the same Grace which accompanies the attunement process. Then whenever we offer Reiki, the receiver’s system responds to this information according to what is most needed. At the same time the practitioner also has the opportunity to respond uniquely to the information. I love that about Reiki. What is this information? I think it’s the knowledge of our natural balanced state or the code that tells our system how to self-heal. It’s the awareness of our true nature as balanced and whole.
While facilitating a Reiki treatment I experience an interesting symphony of sensations in my hands: twitching, vibrations, slight pain, heat, cold, wind, sudden jolts, floating upwards or outwards and many more. It feels to me like the receiver’s bio-energetic system responds as the connection to Reiki is made and the energy field begins to re-organise accordingly. It’s amazing to me how the body knows how to return itself to balance if given the chance to switch into relax and restore mode.
I think of Reiki primarily as a re-balancing process. Of course it would be unrealistic to expect a reversal of years and years of stress and disharmony in a single Reiki session. I often hear people dismiss Reiki as an effective healing therapy before they’ve been for a second session. Many of my clients come with the hope of treating a particular symptom such as headaches, digestive troubles, insomnia and so on. I encourage them to take the focus off the problem and trust in the balancing effects of Reiki treatment. I ask them to remove the expectation of Reiki working in a linear fashion. We haven’t even been able to scientifically test the efficacy of Reiki for specific conditions because Reiki doesn’t work that way. Reiki treatment encourages a person towards wholeness by reminding the entire system of it’s capacity for self-healing. We can’t be sure how that will happen for each person or how long it will take. It really depends on how each person responds to the opportunity to rebalance.
Often Reiki isn’t all that is needed, but it begins the important process of re-organising our subtle vibrational field towards greater balance. Essentially Reiki helps us to return to what we already are. So often we look for healing solutions outside of ourselves. We become disconnected from our innate ability to self-heal. We don’t trust that we have this capability. Reiki is such a simple way to reconnect with our true nature and be reminded of our natural state of balance and bliss.
