As winters start approaching, many people get hit by winter blues or a more serious kind of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It is a common mood disorder with varying prevalence rates across different regions, depending upon the latitude. The symptoms include feeling depressed, bored, having less energy, more melancholy, cravings, excessive sleeping and overall apathy towards life in general. This is attributed to reduced sunlight and less Vitamin D, resulting in altered circadian rhythms and less movement.
As energy channels, it is important for us to acknowledge that Reiki holds the power to both prevent, as well as manage this condition in case it has already begun its course. Herein, I share the strategies I suggest to my clientele to help ease this condition:
1. Soak in the sunshine
If you are in a region that is blessed with ample sunlight, don’t miss the opportunity to soak in the sunlight for a few minutes throughout the year. This not only provides us with a good storehouse of Vitamin D, but helps activate our etheric body positively impacting neural functions and hence influencing mental states profoundly. If you are staying in high latitude regions with limited sunlight, you must take plant-based supplements of Vitamin D3, along with magnesium to keep away paranoia and prevent seasonal depression, even before it hits you.
2. Sleep Hygiene
To prevent winter blues and improve overall health, it is important to maintain a consistent routine of regular meal times and prioritize getting high-quality sleep to regulate your circadian rhythms.
3. Manage your time and anxiety
It is crucial to acknowledge that our physical and subtle bodies require rest at times and it is important to give them the necessary relaxation. This is an opportunity to reflect, visualize and manifest new potentials.
4. Full body Reiki
Just like the external Sun, we all have an internal source of energy within us that can heal any health condition. We can access this energy by purifying and charging all of our chakras daily through the practice of Reiki. If you are feeling cold or depressed due to seasonal changes, pay special attention to the Solar Plexus and Throat chakras. Connect to the energy of the Solar Plexus chakra, which is fiery like the Sun and generates warmth. You can do this while activating it during a Reiki session and then directing its energy to be distributed throughout your body, making you feel warm. The Throat chakra governs the functioning of the thyroid gland, which is the thermostat of the body. It is important to balance this chakra to prevent mood disorders in the long run. After your session, ground yourself to prevent a state of overwhelm from excess energy.
Although Seasonal Affective Disorder and winter blues tend to fade away when the spring season comes rolling around, there is no reason to wallow in despair while the winter is on. Reiki helps to melt away the winter blues gently and gradually, while restoring you to a state of balance with renewed vigor and enthusiasm. So roll up your sleeves, bring together your palms and Reiki those winter blues away!
