Be it anxiety, mood swings, chocolate cravings, weight gain, cramps, back pain, insomnia, acne breakouts (around the chin), headaches, fatigue, bloating, or any other symptom- we women blame all of it on our hormones. Hormonal roller-coaster rides are every month’s unsolicited guest for a majority of the women – especially around that time of the month. For some women, it is brief and lasts only a few minutes or hours while for others it starts a week or two before the onset of menses. That is what we call Premenstrual Syndrome (or PMS). For many women, it is even more serious and assumes the form of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) which disrupts daily life and damages relationships.
While fluctuating hormones are a key factor in PMS and PMDD, we need to question why hormones are out of whack, bringing about so much suffering every month. If hormones were the only reason for PMS and there is no way to get them back into the right space, then women are helpless broken creatures who can never heal and would have to endure this ordeal lifelong. Fortunately, that’s not true. We are here, on this planet to heal and to express our Divine feminine energy. Let us understand why PMS happens and how to beat it for good.
PMS manifests differently in various women, but at the root lies the emotional conflicts in everyday life as well as the ones dormant in the subconscious mind. As women are very sensitive and vulnerable, they tend to carry a lot of emotional baggage (stuck energy especially in the Heart chakra) which greatly impacts their body and mind. Hormones respond to our energy and change once we do.
So let me walk you through some simple ways to align your energy to the Divine Feminine and put an end to PMS:
1. Practice Heart coherence and forgiveness
The Heart chakra is connected to the higher brain centers, so if you achieve the state of heart coherence (balanced heart rhythm), the nervous system automatically responds by restoring your digestion as well as hormones. To achieve heart coherence, practice forgiveness every day as I have explained in my article, Forgiveness- The Foundation of Healing. Resolve your emotional conflicts by practicing Reiki regularly. Focus more on the blessings in your life and lesser on the lack. Here is a quick exercise to achieve the state of heart coherence:
- Focus your attention on the Heart chakra and inhale slowly. Hold as long as you can. Exhale slowly.
- Recall a past experience of appreciation, gratitude, or care for someone you had. Tap into that feeling and stay as long as you possibly can.
2. Conscious diet
Be aware of what you put into your body temple. Take plenty of fruits and vegetables as these carry the healing energy coming directly from the Source. I can’t emphasize enough how many of the menstrual ailments can be eliminated with just a few tweaks around the diet.
3. Avoid xenoestrogens
As a bane of the 21st century, we are constantly exposed to a galore of endocrine disruptors in our environment. Many of these act as ‘pseudo-estrogen’ molecules which can bind with the hormone receptors in our body and stimulate them causing us to experience the agony of PMS. Several of these come from personal care products such as shampoo, conditioner, lotion, balms and are directly absorbed through the skin. If the toxic load of these chemical products is too much for the liver to eliminate, it causes havoc on women’s health.
The menses are just a monthly report card of how well we have been taking care of our bodies and our emotional states. It is meant to be a period of calm and harmony, without causing any troublesome symptoms. I hope we appreciate the dance of hormones that comes with these cycles, rather than blaming them for our misery.
