She walked in slowly, greeting me with a soft smile. She seemed tired, yet her spirit shone through her eyes.
Tara (name changed), a woman in her forties was diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing treatment for the same. After hearing about Reiki from her cousin, she contacted me for Reiki to help her cope with the extensive and exhausting chemotherapy regimen.
Before we could begin her first Reiki session, she was rather quiet and spoke just as much as required. I did a full body Reiki session for her (Reiki for the seven major chakras, knees and feet). At the end of it, she said she felt very relaxed and told me she would come back after a week.
Her second session unfolded differently. When she sat up after her session and I offered her some water to drink, I noticed she had tears in her eyes.
“Are you alright Tara?” I asked gently.
“Yes Haripriya,” she said, “It’s just that I am feeling so moved by this whole Reiki experience. I don’t think I have ever allowed myself to receive anything from anyone for years now. I have mostly been the giver. To be honest, I was feeling restless during my first session last week. It felt strange to do nothing for forty minutes except to receive from another person.”
“And how did you feel this time?” I asked.
“I was feeling a bit restless in the beginning. But I decided to do away with that feeling and immersed myself fully in the experience,” she said.
“That’s great!” I said, “Good for you.”
“Yes. And it feels absolutely wonderful,” she went on, smiling now.
“You deserve to feel that way,” I said.
“Thank you,” she said, “I guess I do.”
When she came in for her third session, her smile was brighter and there was an aura of lightness around her.
“How have you been?” I asked.
“Great!” she said, “ I am still so exhausted. I know I have to get through three more months of treatment. I can’t wait for it to be over. But you know what – my perspective on what I’m going through seems to have shifted. I feel grateful for everything that’s going well for me – medically and spiritually. I feel like I have been able to find answers to some of the ‘Why Me’ questions that were bothering me ever since I was diagnosed. While the diagnosis seemed like a blow, I find that this journey has also brought me some blessings, that I may never have noticed otherwise.”
“I am so happy for you,” I said, “That’s remarkable progress!”
“Thank you,” she said, “Something seems to shift positively within me every time I lie down and receive Reiki!”
“You already have all the answers and wisdom you seek within you. A therapy like Reiki just acts as a bridge for you to connect to your body and to the rich inner world of your spirit,” I said.
She completed her entire medical treatment successfully. She also kept up with weekly Reiki sessions alongside.
She is fit and fine today and is back to working in the corporate world.
She calls occasionally and talks about how she got a new lease of life. She believes this is a brand new chapter and has been making the most of each day.
She also says she now knows how to stop and smell the roses, how to slow down and relax, and how to receive from life as much as she gives to it!
