Recalling our Angels, Part 2 – Angels and Essential Oils of the Months

Article by Jessica North-O’Connell

Last time, we looked at how Angels can interact with us in helping us to create the most appropriate essential oil blends for our purposes, and we touched on the idea of Astrological Angels. This article explores further the concept of Angels in Astrology to help in the aligning of Angelic influences when serving our clients.

I’ve encountered many differing systems when it comes to associating scents and Angels, but just as there are differences between systems of astrological Angels, floral Angels, crystal Angels, etc., I suggest it really comes down to personal experience and personal preference. We are individuals, after all, and there really is no such thing as “one size fits everyone.”

Also remember that:
“…contacting angels is not as simple as using a fragrance…The angel is the driver of a bus traveling to different realms. Fragrance is the route the bus travels. It puts us on the right track, but we need to signal as well. At a bus stop this is done by putting out an arm. When using fragrance the signal is a mental one, and so when using angelic vibrations, we need to use prayer, meditation, and good intent and purpose.

“Angels are not the destination, but the route…”

We can further support and enhance our work with Angels by partnering this practice with Reiki. Regardless of our level of training, our “aromatic working” will benefit exponentially as we incorporate the visualization, sound and state of the Reiki symbols, allowing ourselves to be the conduit of these energies.

Traditionally, each month is assigned its own Angel, though as with birthstones and birth flowers, there is definitely a distinction between the calendar Month and the Astrological month or Sun sign. We also may find differences from one source to the next. Not all of these Angels are well-known.

Here is a starting place to encourage you in your own research:

An Angel of January: Gabriel – Angel of Aquarius

Gabriel’s story is long and complex, according to texts. Variously called the Angel of annunciation, resurrection, mercy, vengeance, revelation and death, Gabriel is considered an Archangel, a term used to describe the station of an Angel in the celestial hierarchies. In general, Archangels are more complex in their domains, and are generally more known than other Angels.

When creating a blend under the auspices of Gabriel, or any other Archangel, expect that it may be many-layered, consisting of a number of different essential oils in varying amounts. Give yourself a chance to allow the blend to evolve.

Some of the essential oils said to be under the auspices of Gabriel:
  • Angelica seed (Angelica archangelica)
  • Bay laurel (Laurus nobilis)
  • Benzoin (Styrax benzoin dryander)
  • Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea)
  • Elemi (Canarium luzonicum)
  • Immortelle (Helichrysum augustifolia)
  • Linden Blossom (Tilia vulgaris)
  • Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha)
  • Narcissus (Narcissus poeticus)
An Angel of February: Barakiel (Barchiel) – Angel of Pisces

Barakiel is considered an Archangel, a Seraphim and a ruler of lightning. Barakiel is said to bring success in games of chance.

Some essential oils associated with Barakiel:
  • Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis)
  • Melissa (Melissa officinalis)
  • Sandalwood (Santalum albanum)
  • Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi)
An Angel of March: Machidiel (Malahidael) – Angel of Aries

Machidiel, considered a Prince, oversees the transition from winter to spring and “exercises dominion for 91 days , from spring to summer.” He is one of the Four Angels of the Kabbalistic Sefirah Malkuth, which represents the Earth. He is also noted for “arranging” meetings between potential couples.

A few essential oils associated with Prince Machidiel include:
  • Cinnamon (Cinnamomm zeylanicum)
  • Juniper berry (Juniperus communis)
  • Pine needle (Pinus sylvestris)
An Angel of April: Asmodel – Angel of Taurus

Originally a chief of the order of the Cherubim, Asmodel is one of those Angels whose persona changed over the course of time. In the realm of Ceremonial Magic, Asmodel is known as the “demon of punishment,” which says more about a mindset of the Cabalist than the energetics of the Angel. According to Richard Webster, Asmodel is the Angel of Patience, a fitting Angel for Taurus.

Essential oils that can be associated with Asmodel include:
  • Cardamon (Elettaria cardamomum)
  • Neroli (Citrus aurantium)
  • Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)
  • Vanilla (Vanilla plantifolia
Angels of May: Ambriel (Ambiel) – Angel of Gemini

In some systems, Raphael is said to be the Angel of Gemini. Raphael is an Archangel, associated with music, healing arts and other domains.

Ambriel is said to be a Prince of the Order of Thrones and whose name has been used as a charm or talisman for protection. He is considered to be an Angel of communication and supports taking spirited action.

An Angel of June: Muriel – Angel of Cancer

Muriel is known as a ruler of the Order of Dominations and is said to offer a magic carpet to those who request one. She is concerned with matters of harmony and peace. Her name is said to mean “perfume of god,” suggesting a connection to scent. Muriel inspires service to others.

An Angel of September: Uriel, (Zuriel) – Angel of Libra

Zuriel, an Angel of Libra, is said to be a Prince of the Order of Principalities and is “a curer of stupidity in man.” Zuriel has also been invoked for protection during childbirth.

The Angel Uriel is one of the better-known Angels, whose legend includes such titles as “regent of the Sun,” “Flame of god,” “Angel of the Presence,” “Archangel of salvation.” It has been said that Uriel belongs both to the Order of Seraphs as well as the Order of Cherubs. Some believe that Uriel is the Angel who appears in many of the Old Testament stories which recount interactions between humans and the Angelic realm.

Some essential oils which may pertain to Uriel include:
  • Geranium (Pelagonium graveolens)
  • Spearmint (Mentha spicata)
  • Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)
An Angel of October: Barbiel – Angel of Scorpio

Barbiel was once considered to be an Archangel and Prince of the Order of Virtues but was demoted to serve as one of seven Electors, planetary Angels of the Underworld. He is also associated with one of the 28 Moon Mansions, shared with 27 other Angels to complete the monthly lunar cycle.

Some essential oils which may be associated with Barbiel include:

Essential oils applicable to Adnachiel include:

An Angel of December: Haniel (Anael) – Angel of Capricorn

Known by some as the Angel of love and sexuality, Haniel is also a Chief of the Order of Principalities, Virtues and Innocents, as well as one of the seven Angels of Creation. A well-known Archangel, she is an energy which offers great protection, has dominion over the planet Venus (called the Star of Love) and the Moon, and is involved in the rulership of earthly kingdoms. Some suspect that Haniel/Anael is another form of Anaphiel, a Soul-gathering Angel.

Essential oils associated with Haniel include:
  • Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens)
  • Oakmoss (Evernia prunastri)
  • Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)
  • Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides)

An exercise
Try your hand at creating Angel blends using the above suggestions. Based on your own knowledge and understanding of these essential oils, what do you discern about Angelic energies as represented by them? Take some time to make a few notes. Then, when you are able to spend some time in meditation, try to connect with the Angelic energies without using any essential oils to see what kind of information you receive. You may find that you compile an entirely different compendium of Angels and essential oils! As always, your work will be enhanced by including Reiki practice.
