Article by Stephanie Drane
I have found that since I started my Reiki journey my life has flowed with joyous synchronicity, my state of mind is calmer and relationships more harmonious, I have found more fulfilling work and a better work/life balance. Love, opportunities, happiness, friendship and support flow through my life because of the presence of Reiki and my positive mindset which is maintained by the Reiki Principles. In this way the Reiki Principles can enhance our lives.
I suggest to my Reiki students that they meditate on each one and what it means to them. Even as a Reiki practitioner who recites the principles almost daily I find it good to review myself in relation to their meaning every now and then. Evaluating how the principles fit into my ever-changing life and how I can live them out.
Following my previous article on the first principle, today I am focusing on the second:
Just for Today, I Will Not Anger.
There is a reason for every human emotion and so anger can be there for a purpose. For example, if an injustice angers you it may inspire you to focus energy into working for positive change. It is possible to take the energy of anger and using Reiki to support you, transmute the energy into positive action for the highest good. You could focus on the issue by sending healing to the situation using Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen and/or do some research and find a way to support the cause in a practical way.
In a situation where anger has helped you; given you the strength to protect yourself or inspired you to work for positive change, it has served it’s purpose. Then it is time to let it go; thank it for it’s presence when you needed it, but then release it. To hang onto anger long after it has served you could lead to bitterness and create blocks to the flow of energy within.
Anger can be a destructive emotion when we hold on to it for too long or allow ourselves to be repeatedly provoked to anger without taking positive action or learning from it. When we get angry we are allowing the thing that triggers our anger to have control over us. Realising what triggers our anger and finding other ways to react can give us back our control and releasing ourselves from old anger patterns feels liberating.
When you come across a situation that would normally trigger your anger, pause. Take a few deep breaths and with the breaths inhale the calming Reiki energy that flows endlessly for you. Exhale the anger, take back the control of your emotions and choose a positive reaction. If a positive reaction seems impossible give yourself space and time and the opportunity to stand back and see what the lessons and positives of the situation might be.
A good way to give yourself healing for anger is to scan your body to feel where in your body you physically feel the anger, (quite often in the stomach area, but not always, mine is sometimes in my face), place your hands there and send soothing Reiki healing to that spot. (Sei He Ki is good here). If it helps visualise the anger – how does it look to you? Red and hot? Cold and steely? Picture it being soothed by Reiki and turned into vibrant, positive energy.
I like to visualise or make representations, so to let go of anger I might draw the anger and write how it makes me feel. Creatively expressing it and releasing as much of the anger as I can onto the paper, using the style of marks and colours that feel appropriate. I’d then draw Reiki symbols over the piece of paper with the intention of healing the situation, and send Reiki to it while I burn it (safely). I like the way the fire changing the paper into ash and smoke represents the Reiki changing the anger into positive action or a lesson for me and the rising smoke reminds me of sending positive Reiki energy out to the universe.
Totally eliminating anger from our lives may not be possible (or good for us), but we are reminded by Mikao Usui to just focus on it one day at a time. Understanding how anger can motivate us and that we can choose how we react to situations means that we can choose a healthy response. And we are so lucky to have the beautiful healing energy of Reiki to help us.
