Article by João Antão Marques
It is well known by Reiki Masters and Reiki Masters/Teachers that, very often, our hands are highly active without even expressing the intention to channel Reiki and, that’s the reason why many Masters don’t usually activate their hands before performing treatments, they simply consider that they don’t need to do so.
Although respecting this position, I’m completely in disagreement with it. Reiki is a sacred energy, Symbols, although being energy activation keys (some consider them as Dimensional Portals which is correct, the HSZSN, for instance, opens the Portal of Distance), are also sacred and, should be respected as such, if they exist, they are to be used.
When you activate your hands a couple of things happen, namely:
- The energy, in your hands, increases;
- The Symbols are easily available, as you have already them in your hands;
- You show your respect to the Symbols/Energy;
- The hand chakras are activated making your hands more sensitive to the subtle energy variations in your patient’s body;
Please keep always in mind that your hands, once activated, are like radars and that you can receive lots of information about your patient if you “listen” to what the energy is telling you.
To activate your hands, just draw your Symbols starting from the last one received, for instance in Usui Tibetan Reiki, the sequence would be:
- Fire Serpent
- Tibetan DKM
- Traditional (Usui) DKM
- HSZSN
- SHK
- CKR
- and, finally, a CKR on the back of your hands, non-dominant hand first, to give an additional energy boost.
As I also have Karuna® Reiki training, I frequently charge my hands with some Karuna® Reiki Symbols (mainly Zonar, Halu and Harth) in order to have them available if I feel the need to use them and, so far, I never felt any problem when switching energies, the only caution to follow is to avoid the use of Karuna® Reiki Symbols in the first three treatments, as the Karuna® Reiki energy is much stronger than the “usual” Reiki one.
Always keep in mind that Reiki Masters energy is not the same for everybody as it depends greatly on experience, spiritual growth/practice, attitude towards energy and, sometimes something that works with a given Reiki Master can, eventually, not be replicable by others.

Very informative. Many thanks.
Is this not also an obvious show of respect and appreciation for the reiki client?
