Music is an expression of vibratory, vocal, instrumental and auditory frequencies that profoundly affects our body/mind/spirit. Singing, playing and/or listening to music feeds our energetic fields, just as the universal lifeforce of Reiki does. Participating in music by singing also uses both sides of the brain. The right side of the brain tracks the melodies, the left, the words and tempo.
Though Reiki frequencies are unheard by our human ears, they also help us in similar ways. The Mental/Emotional symbol, taught in Reiki level II, is perhaps the most direct connection to music. The Mental/Emotional symbol represents harmony and balance. The left side of this symbol represents the yang aspects of life. The right side represents the yin aspects. These are deliberately reversed from our own yin (left) and yang (right) sides to encourage balance.
The Reiki Harmonic, a simple tool that I teach in Reiki level I and at Reiki share groups, where Reiki Practitioners stack our hands over a specific area in a recipient’s energy field or body, is another example of cooperatively combining our own unique frequencies as conduits for Reiki energy for the benefit of another.
The music we choose to listen to can support and strengthen our energy fields or create dissonance. The messages contained in the lyrics also affect us profoundly.
Music is also important because it reminds us of core values that transcend human and cultural laws and traditions. Because of that, how the music makes me feel, the themes that come up for me, and why, when I choose music, are the main energies around the music that resonates for me.
Themes and Meanings
Music can speak of moments of epiphany, when we see our own divinity. Moments when we realize that only we can forgive ourselves. Any ‘original stains’ cast upon us by others don’t have to brand us for life or become part of our psyche. The realization that we are part of the Divine blasts those thoughts out of our being, just as sending Reiki breaks through physical, mental or emotional blocks that we have created.
Music also helps us connect more deeply with moments of vulnerability. These can feel difficult for us, but are actually moments of creation, fission, of unbounded, absolute zero. In other words, moments of the purest perfection of ourselves. Our beings are fed if we respect and make sacred our humblest and perhaps, our messiest, moments.
In these moments we simultaneously see our humanity and our divinity. We see that we are always and forever our own best friend. We see that we are never alone. And that no matter how vulnerable we feel, we are always safe. These messages embedded in the frequencies of music are reasons why playing music while sharing Reiki is so beneficial.
We enslave ourselves with laws, expectations, traditions and limiting beliefs, but we are never truly slaves. Even physical chains cannot enslave our spirits. The frequencies of love, courage, integrity, compassion and many others, unites us. When that happens, no chains can bind us, no matter how heavy or intricately woven they might be. These moments of the sudden realization that we are truly not enslaved after all are powerfully transforming.
Musical Aspects
Though musical lyrics are powerful and hold their own frequencies, what drives the lessons deep is the melody—the frequency. This is one reason why, as we teach Reiki, we give students the opportunity to feel each Symbol. Each has its own unique frequency. As we learn to recognize and work with, the unique frequency of each Reiki Symbol, we allow the music of the universe to bring and sustain balance and harmony in our beings.
