Did you know that “after” you give a Reiki treatment, you will then receive one for yourself? Some practitioners do, but do you know how this works exactly? In my early years of training and practicing, I could never figure out why I felt the way I did after giving Reiki to someone. I knew I was helping them tremendously and enjoyed the channeling, but it didn’t always “feel” that great energetically afterwards. What I didn’t know was that I was receiving Reiki after I delivered a session. Receiving Reiki while you are driving your car or doing business or meeting with people doesn’t necessarily feel good if you are sensitive to energy and not in a receptive state.
While I was training through the various levels of Reiki, I never thought to ask my Reiki Master why I felt a little off after giving a session. I guess I was too embarrassed, at the time, to ask what she meant by “When you give a Reiki session, you also receive one”. As I grew, expanded, questioned and experienced, I learned two important things about Reiki which I am hoping will help you to grow and expand. One, is that Reiki will automatically “give” to you “after” you’ve given to another. It doesn’t wait to fill you. It fills you right away. If you aren’t aware that this is happening and are sensitive to energy, it may feel uncomfortable and cause you to feel a bit off center. Also, if the ego gets a hold of this, it may cause you to think that you feel afraid or nervous about sharing this natural gift.
The other thing I learned was that I needed to practice grounding techniques both before and after giving Reiki sessions. (Will save that topic for a future article.)
What I’ve learned, is that once the session you gave has ended, and you have humbly disconnected from the session, you will then be filled with Reiki yourself. (Not at the same time as you are giving a session, but afterwards.)
Prior to you delivering the Reiki, whether it be in-person or long distance, the energy will begin to gather over your Crown chakra. You are given the Reiki that is for your client only. This energy is not for you; it’s for them and it’s exactly what they need. After the session has ended, then you will then receive for yourself.
If you are sensitive to energy or are a spiritual intuitive who receives messages for others, as the Reiki is building over your Crown chakra, you may feel “icky” or hear certain thoughts or messages that may make you feel a bit off-centered. Please know this has nothing to do with you; it’s information for your client. It’s not yours. When you give the Reiki session, everything will make sense and you will know why you were sensing the information you were. The “icky-ness” may also be your ego judging the information coming in or trying to sabotage you in some way. Just allow what you sense and feel prior to sessions to be what it is and do not attach to any of it; simply take care of yourself, drink water, prepare for the session and stay connected to your heart. Doesn’t that make you breathe a sigh of relief and put a smile on your face and open your heart even wider?! It’s not yours, you’re just feeling, hearing or sensing the energy! š
Once I learned this, I felt so much better, was able to help more people, was able to help myself and looked forward to receiving in joy…as it was meant to be. Love.
So how to receive, you ask? This is part of the wonderful gift of Reiki. Since you know that this will be happening, automatically, for your highest and greatest good, you can clear your schedule for about an hour after you give a session, create a sacred space for yourself to “receive” by lighting a candle, putting on some gentle music and laying down in a comfortable place where you can set your intention and let the Reiki flow to you. Call in Usui Sensei and your Reiki Guides, protect yourself and your space in White Light and open to receive by simply saying, “Yes, I am now ready to receive Reiki. Thank you.”
Another way you can set up receiving, is by letting your Reiki Guides and Usui Sensei know that you’d like them to give you as much Reiki as you need “now” to keep you centered and balanced throughout the day and that you’d like to receive the rest of it at night while you sleep. You can also tell them a specific time that you’d like to receive during waking hours. This is a nice way to do it, especially if you have other activities planned for yourself for the rest of the day or even other clients to work with. There are many different ways you can do this. The important thing is to be aware that after you give a session, you will then receive one for yourself to integrate and enjoy. The Reiki will start flowing to you right away, unless you tell it to do something else. This is why I suggest that you consciously make a decision on how and when you’d like to receive. Free will does play a part in this.
We need happy, healthy, whole, balanced and centered Reiki Masters and practitioners who can deliver from a place of fullness. Here are some ways to help you do just that! I hope this serves you in a great way!
EnJOY and Namaste.

Very nice article ..came at the right time when i needed it. Thank u. Love n light
You are completely off the mark with this article, reiki doesn’t come to you after the treatment, it comes during… The reason for that being that you and the client are one. We are one with the universe.
I agree. š
Hi,
I, too, feel Reiki comes to both parties during the session. Reiki has to flow though the therapist to the client, and like water flowing through a canyon, Reiki has to impact the channel.
I also believe you should never feel “off” after a session. This has happened to me when I forgot to close the session for myself as well as the client.
But maybe the experience of these topics is different for each therapist.
Thoughts?
Roger
the way I understand healing and attunement is that the Reiki practitioners high energy encourages a matching vibe in the person receiving the treatment, it’s usually a simultaneous process, not before or after. But, it works differently for everyone.
Thank you for this wonderful article. I agree with Maria. You can use free will to help decide when you receive the energy as long as you take the time and self care to do so. Then you will continuously be blessed to give it.
Thought provoking article. Thank you. I agree with BOTH perspectives that reiki comes to the practitioner during the session and the perspective that it comes after the session. During a session there is a synergistic feeling of energy flowing through me providing a feeling of being cleansed. Following a session, I often feel energized and relaxed as if I am receiving a treatment. I often feel that I receive as much benefit as the client.
Wonderful, Kavita!! So happy this helped you in Divine Timing. ???????????? Please let me know if I can be of further help to you as you.
Thanks for the comments, everyone. What I am describing here is simply that the Reiki we give during a session is not for the one channeling. It’s for the one receiving. Yes, we feel wonderful while giving and we ourselves benefit in that regard, but the energy is a one-way channel, from practitioner to receiver…after we channel the energy we receive…and not from the person we just have to. We get filled from the Divine life force energy itself.
In my years of experience with teaching, Attuning, practicing and giving during client sessions, it has always taught me this. I’ve been in situations where people are trying to give as they receive and have also helped students to become clear and open channels where healthy boundaries were needed and it’s always shown up in the same way. Give it a try and see how it feels and supports you. āŗļø EnJOY!
Hi, Maria!

Very nice sharing.I agree with you
Veey interesting. Thankyou. X
Reiki is flowing to and through each and every one of us at all times, you do not need to wait to receive it.
Stop writing bullshits. You receive reiki for your client and for you to keep you centered at the same time. If you are sick or tired, during a session with a client you give and receive, that’s why you feel much better after the session with the client.
Thanks for sharing the excellent article
I receive Reiki fjor myself during the treatment for someone else. The minute I start Reiki my heart opens and my whole self comes alive. I feel a strong love feeling
I am a Reiki healer. During a session I ask Reiki to heal me and a particularly painful relationship I am dealing with. I channel through my hands to the patient and visualise Reiki through myself. Is this acceptable and workable.
That’s true. Experienced the same after the healing session. It’s natural. You are healed for the same cause, when Reiki heals others through you. Thank you Maria. Namaste.
i have done Reiki since 1990. the last few yrs. When i do distant Reiki my whole body lights up especially my heart.
