The aura is the part of our energy body that extends outside of the actual physical body. In science this is called the biofield. Even non-living objects can be observed as having an aura, especially the etheric layer. The aura is often thought of in terms of being a shield, but it is much more than that. It is an energy field that exchanges and processes communication signals, just as all energy fields do. It helps us make sense of the world around us and also helps to relay information into the physical body.
The aura is essentially a blueprint or overlay of the physical body, which contains all the energetic codes needed for the body to function properly on every level, including the physical. The aura doesn’t simply extend around us, but it also flows through us, integrating information into our bodies. The aura is usually referred to as having several layers or parts, which is true, but these don’t neatly stack on top of each other most of the time. Rather they shift and interact with each other in a fluid way, while essentially maintaining their position. You could think of it somewhat like the rainbow rings of color you may have seen in water that has oil in it. The rings shift as the water moves, but they essentially stay in their own place.
The main layers of the aura are the etheric layer, the emotional, the mental, the astral, the etheric template, the celestial, and the causal. The etheric layer is the basic life force indicator and is the one that is the easiest for most people to see and most anyone can visualize this layer with a few minutes of practice. If you hold your hand up in front of a white wall, spread your fingers apart and let your gaze soften as you focus between the fingers to the wall behind your hand, you will see it within a minute or so.

The emotional, mental and astral layers are the ones that we often sense or that we see colors in relation to. These have to do with our thoughts and emotions, as well as our feelings of love (or the opposite) and connection to others and the world around us. If you are very empathic or sensitive, you may also sense and feel things in another’s etheric template layer, picking up illnesses or impending illnesses. The celestial and causal are not as readily seen or felt as the others. These are the layers that connect us to the spiritual realms and shield us from negative aspects of the material realms.
Sometimes we read about using our auras as a shield or a bubble or protection. A healthy and well-functioning aura does much more than simply act as a bubble around our bodies. It does us a great deal of good to use our imagination to strengthen and work with our energy bodies. This is called imaginal healing and it is very effective as we are sending energy signals to our bodies, our brains and our cells, via our imaginations when we do this. However, we need to make full use of our imagination, fully envisioning what we wish to create in order to get the most out of the process.
To do this with the aura, straighten the spine and imagine the line of energy running up the front of the body, from the base of the pelvis to the roof of the mouth. Next, imagine the energy line running from the base of the spine to the top of the head, and connecting to the one in the front, at the roof of the mouth. In your imagination, connect these lines as a full and complete circuit of energy which flows easily in each direction, front to back and back to front, in a loop. Now imagine energy flowing out of the top of your head from this center line, pouring like a fountain of energy all around your body, 360 degrees in a toroidal field which connects at your feet and re-enters your body, flowing back up the center line of energy to begin again. If you feel any place where the energy doesn’t seem to flow strongly, then focus your attention on this area for a few moments until the energy flows easily. This creates a strong and smoothly flowing energy field through your aura and into your entire system. You will feel refreshed, connected and sovereign within your own energy field.
