Article by Haripriya Suraj, Reiki Master
Many people ask the question, “Do Reiki practitioners take on the karma of those to whom they offer healing?”
This is akin to asking: “Do health care professionals take on the illnesses of those to whom they offer medical care?”
If that was how things worked, the medical community would be plagued by the vast number of ailments they treat round the clock.
We do NOT take on people’s karmas by offering them Reiki. Reiki is universal life force energy. When we offer Reiki to someone, we only act as a channel for this energy to flow through us and to reach someone who needs it. We are not giving away something that belongs exclusively to us. We channel an energy that is the life force and birthright of every individual. This energy works for the highest good of the recipient.
Even if a practitioner intends with all her might that Reiki manifests a certain fixed outcome for an individual, it will not happen if the recipient does not intend the same and if that outcome is not in the recipient’s best interest.
The possibility of healers taking on karma is present only in the following instances:
- When a healer uses the energy with wrong intentions and promises a cure/fixed outcome through Reiki. If false promises are made as a means to make money, become famous and other such egoistic reasons, the practitioner may initiate a karmic cycle.
- When a healer uses healing techniques to forcefully heal a problem in a way the client deems is best, rather than allowing higher wisdom to lead the way.
- When the healer believes that he or she is more responsible for the client’s healing than the person himself. This strips people of their own power to heal and makes them dependent on the healer. This can also initiate a karmic cycle.
- When the healer forces a healing on someone who does not wish to be healed.
The above pointers apply to all kinds of healers and not just to Reiki practitioners. Even medical professionals who use medicine with misaligned intentions would initiate karmic cycles. But when medical care is offered for the right reasons and as per standard protocol, there is no reason for them to take on karma.
Finally, these principles apply to all of life and not just to healing! Our intent is what determines our karma, which means we create our karma. And we certainly have the choice to intend in accordance with the highest good of all that is. So, there is no need to fear karma.
Reiki is a gentle guide to each of us and it only works to bring about the best. As long as we use it with the right intentions, we will always bring more love, light and blessings both to ourselves and to the planet!
