Ask Reiki Rays Podcast #10: Why Are the Symbols I have Been Attuned to Different than the Internet Versions?

Reiki Symbols

Question by Randy:

I have my second degree Reiki. I have a couple of questions about the symbols and my connection to them.

I searched for the symbols and found dozens of samples on the Internet. They’re all very similar and recognizable.

However the ones I was given are different. One is the same, one is a distorted version, and one is totally unrecognizable.

So why don’t mine look similar? Why is one of mine so drastically different? What exactly am I attuned to, and what is my connection to those specific symbols? Is the one I was given the only version of that symbol that will work for me?

Is it possible to have other symbols work for me yet, like the Master symbol?

Answer by Tammy Hatherill:

Hi there Randy,

My name is Tammy, from Darwin, Australia, and I am a Reiki Master in the Usui system of Reiki healing.

Yes it does sound like you’ve been attuned to the correct symbols. Over time, symbols can be distorted and it does sound like you’ve had distortions somewhere along the line, or perhaps it’s the ones on the Internet that you’ve seen that are distorted. Who says yours are the “wrong” ones and the Internet are the “right” ones? So just keep in mind that things can distort.

If you think about the Bible and the stories of the Bible – those stories get distorted over time, so the same with the Reiki symbols. As long as you’re using them with the right intent, good intent, and for the highest purpose of everyone involved, then you should be OK.

As for the Reiki Master symbol, if you’re not being trained at the Reiki Master Teacher level, then no, you won’t be able to use that symbol. Whatever symbols you come across on the Internet, or out in the world, if you’re not attuned to them by a Reiki Master, then really they are null and void. You really should be attuned by a Reiki Master to use symbols.

To me it sounds like you have been attuned to the ones that you’re talking about, and it’s just a natural thing that’s happened with the distortion.

So go forward and Reiki the world. Have trust and faith that you are attuned and you have been attuned properly to the universal energy, and just enjoy!

All right, I hope that answers your question, thank you.

    Hi Randy and Tammy,
Tammy’s answer is ,of course, precisely correct in very way. But , Randy, if I am to guess which is the divergent symbol it would be the distance symbol, Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen . Having read very many Reiki books and also visited myriad of websites I’ve not yet seen this symbol drawn as it was taught to me and to which I was attuned. Yet I know that it works perfectly and I’ve also taught it to my students as it’s the one I was attuned to. I do mention in classes that there are differences in the way this symbol and the master symbol are drawn but that we need to remain faithful to the symbol we are taught and attuned to. Be that as it may, once you are attuned, Reiki will always flow and intention is always key. Enjoy this beautiful energy every day .

I know that my “distance” symbol works. I’m still a little confused though. Maybe it will make sense after I get my master level.
I got the impression from my class that the master can just decide what symbol they want to use/teach and then attune me to that one.
I assumed that the master had to be attuned to the specific version themselves and that they can only attune me to the one that they have been attuned to. In other words, they don’t really get a choice which one they attune me to. So my version must have been passed down through all the masters in the lineage right up to whomever taught my master/teacher. That’s why it surprised me to see drastically different versions.
So can a master just choose which version they want to teach … or do they have to be attuned to that specific one first.
