It is always a good idea to let your intuition guide you as to how to proceed during a Reiki session. While the Reiki hand positions are very effective as guidelines, it is important to remember they are only guidelines. We can greatly limit ourselves as healers if we become rigid in our thinking about where to place our hands during a Reiki treatment, perhaps reducing the effectiveness of our healing work or our connection with the client.
Recently I had a situation that reminded me of the importance of being flexible with my hand placements and of following my intuition. I had finished writing one Friday evening and heard my cat wheezing in the next room. I knew she had had been fine earlier that day, so I checked on her. Just as I walked in, she sneezed and coughed. I noticed she had a significant amount of thick, sticky dark brown drainage coming from one of her eyes and running all the way down her face. She looked miserable and not like her usual perky self at all.
I picked her up and carried her to the chair to give her Reiki. I was concerned that she was ill on a Friday evening when the veterinarian would already be closed. It didn’t appear to be an emergency at that time, so I wasn’t ready to take her to the animal emergency clinic, but I didn’t like the idea of her feeling miserable until Monday.
I put my hands on her—one hand on her chest and one on her back and let the Reiki flow. I could sense that her sinus passages, her upper chest passages and her throat were all very aggravated. She settled in and gladly accepted the Reiki. I moved my hands periodically as she let me know it was time.
After 15 or 20 minutes had passed, she curled up on my lap and she seemed very relaxed. She was no longer wheezing and had stopped sneezing. But her eye was still draining and looked very irritated. I felt that her chest and throat area were much calmer when I scanned them, but the eye was visibly still irritated. I felt that I should spot treat the eye by holding my hands slightly away from her face and directing Reiki toward the eye area.
As I began to do this, holding my hands about 6 inches away from her face, in front of the affected eye, I could feel the energy in my hands increase dramatically and could even see the waves of energy flowing from my hands into her eye. Mina’s face began to twitch and she shivered now and then—all things I have seen animals do when they are receiving Reiki. What happened over the next few minutes was one of the most amazing and rapid healing experiences I have ever had with Reiki so far.
As I beamed Reiki from my hands to my cat’s eye, I noticed that the drainage actually began to dry up in front of my eyes, while I was treating her! It was flowing when I started, and as I spot treated the area, the flow stopped. Then the gooey drainage that had been there from before became dried very quickly, becoming a small hard clump. As this happened, Mina shook as if she had a sudden itch and then began to wash her face. She cleaned the hard, dried clump of old drainage off of her face. Her eye was perfectly clear after that and showed no sign of the irritation that had been there a few minutes before. She appeared relieved and relaxed.
I was so amazed! If I hadn’t seen her feeling so ill just a half hour before, and heard her sneezing and wheezing, I would not have believed this was the same cat. She was completely fine and looked like her normal self again. She has shown no sign of a recurrence since that day and is the picture of health, as usual. I am very glad I followed my intuition of trying the spot treatment in this situation!
