Article by Haripriya Suraj, Reiki Master
Before being introduced to Reiki, many of us were deeply absorbed in the world of matter. We led mechanical lives and allowed circumstances to toss us around. We often watched as mute spectators while the drama of our lives unfolded. Then as if by magic, we were brought in touch with the divine energy of Reiki. Reiki practice strengthened our connection with the spirit world. We felt more empowered and understood that we are the makers of our reality. We learnt the art of working with energy and vibration to bring about positive changes in our lives.
The beauty of this connection to spirit is that our higher chakras receive plenty of nourishment. As a result, they stay open and healthy. The more we connect with the higher realms, the more wonderful we feel. Life takes on an almost intoxicating flavour and it is quite easy to get addicted to this flavour. When we get addicted, we tend to neglect the lower chakras, whose energies resonate more with the Earth. We may even reach a point where we dismiss the health of the lower chakras as unimportant. The downside of this is that it can cause us to go off balance and also induce a variety of unpleasant symptoms.
Here are some symptoms caused by inadequate grounding:
- Frequent fatigue
- Lethargy
- Addiction to the spiritual path and forming an identity out of it
- Unhealthy and extreme sensitivity to people, situations and energies that impairs normal functioning in the world
- An unhealthy desire to withdraw from everything and everyone.
- The birth of the spiritual ego. This arises out of the feeling that we are somehow better than others because of our healing capabilities and inclination to spiritual growth.
The last symptom is the most deadly of all and can cause one to go into a downward self-destructive spiral.
Some of these symptoms are also experienced during cycles of aura cleansing, which most healers experience from time to time. But in that case, we know deep down that it is a temporary phenomenon related to cleansing. But when the same symptoms appear due to a lack of grounding, they can prove to be rather self-destructive. You will sense the difference because you will feel unusually drained and miserable when these symptoms surface due to inadequate grounding.
It is very important for us to keep in mind that the Earth’s energy is as nourishing as the energy emanating from higher planes. It only serves a different purpose. One cannot stay balanced in a body designed for the Earth without absorbing its supporting energies.
So, how can we make sure that we are adequately grounded at all times?
Reiki Situations
Whenever you give yourself Reiki, it would be good to have your feet in contact with the floor. Bare feet would be even better. If you prefer to lie down while giving yourself Reiki, you can use a mat rather than lie on a couch or other elevated surface. Have your feet planted on the floor when you lie on the mat. If you can’t stay in this position for the entire session, you can surely do so for at least some of the time. Once you finish your Reiki session, draw the power symbol on the soles of your feet. Stand up and feel the Earth’s energy moving up your feet and flooding your root, sacral and solar plexus chakras. Express your gratitude to Reiki and to the Earth for helping you achieve perfect balance.
Non-Reiki Situations
Be completely aware whenever you go about performing activities that are not directly related to Reiki practice. Play each of your earthly roles with full awareness and enthusiasm. If you are a parent, give it your hundred percent. If you are in a relationship, be there completely for your partner and enjoy it. Even when you perform routine activities like cooking, cleaning, eating, bathing, walking, sleeping etc, maintain a state of awareness and participate whole heartedly in all your earthly assignments.
This kind of a balanced approach will help you make the most of both worlds. True spiritual growth is not an isolated event that happens when we keep away from the world and remain in an isolated cocoon. It happens when we are out in the world, making the most of our Earthly experiences and shining our inner light at the same time!
