Article by Deborah Lloyd, Reiki Master
It was quite a few years ago when a friend lent me a copy of Masaru Emoto’s book, The Hidden Messages in Water. I was simply blown away! Although my understanding of energy had grown immensely since learning Reiki, seeing actual photos of water crystals deepened this understanding even more. Dr. Emoto had performed a number of experiments where water had been polluted and then loving thoughts were sent to it. Photos of water crystals “before and after” demonstrated how much these thoughts improved the water crystals. Before the experiment began, the crystals were deformed and dark. After positive energy was sent, crystals from the same water source were perfectly shaped and stunningly beautiful.
Drinking clean, healthy water has always been a priority of mine. But, we took it a step further, by adding positive energy to it. It became a ritual in our household to tape loving words on the bottom of our water pitcher, or to send Reiki to any drinking water we imbibed.
However, the most important lesson of Dr. Emoto’s work is the effects of thoughts on physical substances, such as water. In the same way, our thoughts have a direct effect on other people. During one Reiki session, a client presented with back pain. I received the message she was under psychic attack, being “stabbed in the back” by other people’s thoughts. Since this is a regular client, and I knew her spiritual beliefs are very open, I shared this message with her. She stated the message described her work environment exactly. Due to an unpopular stance she took, several coworkers were spreading untrue rumors, attacking her integrity. We discussed ways she could protect herself energetically each day, when she entered her workplace. Her back pain soon disappeared.
Our thoughts about ourselves and our actions are also very powerful, and affect our own energy levels. Think about a time when you felt disappointed in yourself, or ashamed of an action you took. How harsh were your judgments? What words of criticism did you use? Now, think about your body’s energy level for the next minutes, or hours. Were you tired, irritable and tense? Did you feel despondent and sad?
Let’s rewrite the script, by using this imaginative exercise. Focus on that same situation, when you felt disappointment or shame. But, this time, talk to yourself in a loving way. Tell yourself that you could have made better choices, but you learned a good life lesson and will not do it again. Forgive yourself. Remind yourself you are a human being who is always unconditionally loved by the Divine. Check in with your feelings – you may be feeling calm and peaceful, and perhaps giving gratitude for yet another opportunity to grow.
Sadly, Dr. Emoto died last month, at the age of 71 years. Let’s send him positive thoughts and love for being a great teacher to all of us. I will think of him every time I see my joyful words on the bottom of my water pitcher!

Hi. This is a wonderful article although I couldn’t help but seeing you mentioning, you shared possibilities of how she could protect herself in her workplace and eventually her back pain disappeared. Could you share this tip with us as well? I am very interested in learning arrays of ways to protect ourselves, energetically! Thank you!

Protecting yourself from negative psychic attacks – negative thoughts from others – is as simple as setting the intention and asking for spiritual help. Calling upon Archangel Michael is always effective as he is the Archangel of Protection. Your guardian angel and our deceased loved ones can also provide protection for us. Some people prefer visualization and they picture Divine Light surrounding them, as a barrier against all negative energy. Another possibility is to strengthen your own solar plexus energies, such as wearing yellow, or the gemstones associated with this chakra. Building up your own authentic power is the best defense against the fears of others, being projected onto you. Thanks for your question!!

hi Deborah. I am suffering from severe muscle spasms in my back and knees for the last four years. It happened at a time, when i was going through severe tensions within family, and as your article mentions, people were hurling abuses and accusations at me, for no fault of mine. Your article so much appeals to me. The problem is that even though I have made peace with my family members who did this to me, I am still suffering from the pain, and it doesn’t seem to get any better. What could I have done, that it is still persisting? Can someone else really do that much damage to you, if you are not wrong at your place?
Hello Anisha, As you know, pain can occur from a variety of sources. Not every pain has an emotional or spiritual source – although some do. Concerning your question, “can someone do that much damage?”. My work experience has been that usually when the negative thoughts stop, the problems disappear. However, it may be possible the negative energies have stayed with you. I wonder if the stress of that time might have actually had a physical manifestation, causing a chronic condition. It is concerning that these pains have been so persistent for such a long time. Have you seen a doctor and and had a full medical evaluation? Is it possible an injury occurred around the same time, that you may not be aware of? Are you using Reiki, or other energy healing modalities, to heal the source of the problem? Please let us know how you are doing.
Thanks Deborah. Yes I have seen doctors, and gone through MRIs, Xrays and everything possible. Undertook yoga, physiotherapy, acupuncture. When nothing worked, I finally accepted that it has to do with my emotional issues, and no physical problems as such. I am attuned to Usui and Karuna Reiki, and have started practising it daily now. I pray and hope that it works, and heals me.
At times, it just leaves me wondering that can someone really damage you to that extent? Do ‘curses’ really exist?
Thanks, Anisha, for the added information. There are certainly many people who believe that curses exist, or that entities can attach themselves to your energy fields. To be honest, I do not have professional expertise in this area – what I know I have read in books, or heard in workshops. Perhaps, you can find someone who is an expert in these areas. Other readers – do you know anyone who might be a help to Anisha?
And, what you are doing right now – praying and using Reiki – is great. Perhaps, you can ask for spiritual guidance to lead you to the right person – if more assistance is needed.
Positive thoughts and energy to you,
Deb
I just saw your reply to Anisha and was moved by how honest and straightforward it is. So many healers and practitioners of energywork are all too keen to push their services (and well, everyone does have to make a living wage) but an honest admission that something is outside your practice area, that really makes me smile and want to trust the person 🙂
Z,
Thank you for this statement. I agree with you, and have not worked with practitioners, as a client, when it seems they need to come across as knowing everything….it is not impossible to be trained in everything!!
With much appreciation,
Deborah
