Are you ever worried that you are using or sending your own energy, rather than Divine energy? Are you concerned that you are feeling the same symptoms as your client, within your own body?
Please be reassured that if you are attuned to Reiki then you will be sending Divine energy if you follow a few simple guidelines. Feeling other’s symptoms is natural for very sensitive, empathic and clairsentient healers. However, there are some steps you can take to ensure your own safety and energy field is protected during a treatment, whether it be distance or hands-on.
It’s vital that at the beginning of the session you ‘ground’ yourself whilst at the same time bringing in the Reiki energy. Thus the importance of saying your Reiki Invocation as taught in Reiki 1 (generally). Saying your invocation connects you to divine energy, which assures you it’s Reiki energy being channelled and not your own. Grounding yourself ensures you are still connected to the earth and not being drawn into the issues and illness of your client.
“To my dear Angels above in love and light, I ask to channel Reiki Energy for the total healing of mind, body and soul for my client. To my dear Angels above in love and light I ask that protection surround both my client and me during this treatment. Thank you”
I am extremely fortunate that my Reiki and Tarot practice is set up in nature (as the below photo demonstrates), and so grounding for me is as simple as walking onto the grass. Other people like to ground themselves with crystals or a special necklace or object of importance. There are many different grounding tools and techniques and I suggest you find one that you are drawn to and resonate with.
I recently received an email from a concerned lady who was overwhelmed by the ‘feelings, symptoms and emotions’ of her client, and felt she was using her own energy and not the Divine, because of the intensity of her experiences. This is not the case – if you’ve done your invocations and taken steps to protect yourself and your client, then it will be Divine energy. Some healers are much more in-tune and have a powerful ability to really ‘feel’ what is going on within their client. It’s a beautiful gift to have, however always remember that you come first and if you become overwhelmed during a treatment, you must step back and out of your clients’ energy field and re-ground, before stepping back in to complete the treatment.
If I become overwhelmed during a treatment, I simply stand on the grass and feel the earth’s energy! I imagine tree roots anchoring me to the middle of the earth’s centre. This helps me to detach from my client’s energy for a ‘breather’ whilst I take care of me. When I am ready and balanced again, it’ll be more beneficial to the client, receiving the best treatment possible.
There is nothing wrong with stepping back for the time you require. Other people may step back from the table or chair and hold their crystals. Some may step back and say their chant or prayer (either silently or very quietly). Others may step back and hold something else of significance to them. The important thing is to step back and” ground”. Moving away from the auric and energy field of your client is essential if you feel overwhelmed by their issues/concerns/symptoms. Re-grounding can be varying in time; however, it’s essential for all concerned.
On completion of a treatment, whether hands-on or distance, it’s important to break the connection you’ve built with your client throughout the appointment. This will ensure you do not continue to experience or feel the symptoms you’ve been exposed to whilst working with their energy. I do this by using the Raku symbol.
Also, it’s important to ground yourself again, after your client has left. I stand on the grass as mentioned, plus I physically run my hands over my body and shake them. I imagine that I’m cutting off all connection and releasing energy – not belonging to me, into the ground, the trees and wildlife. I know nature will absorb this energy and transfer it into something beautiful. It releases me from my client and releases my client from me. Every time I shower, I always, always use the water and imagine it as white light. As the white light/water runs down my body, it’s cutting away and shifting all energy that does not belong to me. It sluices right through energies and leaves only mine. All the rest washes down the plug hole.
I do further protections of my area before clients arrive as well. Every morning I have a ritual that I do without fail, regardless if I have clients due that day or not. Outside in the garden, I stand facing my gates and I draw all 4 traditional Reiki symbols. I ask the Angels to provide protection. In total I do this four times, once each – facing North, South, East and West. My entire house and gardens are protected, as is anyone who enters and of course me. This means I have an added layer of protection (energy wise) even before I begin a treatment!
It’s very important for you to use your invocations, protections, and grounding techniques before, during and after a Reiki treatment. This ensures you are using divine energy and not your own. It also ensures you are taking care of both your client and yourself. This is essential for a beautiful Reiki experience. Don’t forget to give thanks to ‘Source’ and the ‘Divine’ afterwards.
I hope this article has given you some useful ideas and tips to enhance your Reiki experiences.

Thanks and namaste.
Hi Muzna, that’s great to read! I’m so glad the article reminded you of a symbol you’ve been exposed to before. Now you’ll be able to use more often in your own Reiki treatments. It’s a wonderful symbol. Love. light and harmony. Tammy x
Hi Muzna. Thank you four this useful information 🙂
Regarding, the Raku symbol, does one have to have been attuned to it in order to use it, and if so, when?
Thanks
Hi Lauren, it’s Tammy here. I am the author of this article not Muzna. I’m so glad you found the information useful and helpful. Yes a person needs to be attuned to the Raku symbol to use it. I offer distance attunements for 13 Non-traditional Reiki symbols to those who have already been attuned to Reiki. Please email me for more information. [email protected] Love, light and harmony. Tammy xx
It is very useful.thank you very much for sharing ,
Very enlightening n informative. Yes at times we r not careful in protecting ourselves. Is it possible that being a reiki channel when u r verbally counselling people they connect to u n start withdrawing energy from u without your knowledge?
Hi Ravinavtej, yes that can happen. We must protect our own energy from the moment we wake up, and throughout the day as well. It sounds like you are describing energy vampires. I would google that term for more information if I were you, if you don’t understand it or the concept fully. Love, light and harmony. Tammy x

HI Tammy, this is a brilliant article as I sometimes feel dragged down after a session of healing so it’s great to have the Raku symbol to cut the connection. I’m just getting back into Reiki after a long time & am trying to remember a closing invovcation I was taught, can you help me with that? Sending you Love and Light. Angela
Dear Angela, I’m so happy that you enjoyed reading the article. yes the Raku symbol is a powerful one and a great non-traditional symbol. I don’t really have a closing invocation. I simply ‘thank’ my angels/spirits/guides/source and close that way. I don’t think you need to be to structured with your wording. Just say what feels right at the time and you may find each closing is different. I hope this helps. With much love, light and harmony. Tammy xxx
Wonderful article Tammy, thank you for sharing your insight. I found it very informative and helpful.
